Friday, 28 April 06 :: public service announcement

this website is taking the public stance that it supports the spanish language version of the star spangled banner. we here at rivervision (okay, its just me) may not always be the best advocate for oppressed populations, but we try our hardest at all times to be a good ally. we do not believe that singing the american national anthem in spanish is unpatriotic. we are all immigrants. lets celebrate that. lets celebrate the diversity of this country. lets all embrace it, honour it, and love it.

I would never hire someone that could not speak English. I too favor oppressed populations - and law-abiding legal residents in the USA are becoming more and more oppressed!

I support English-only in the USA, and DO NOT support tax payer $$$ to teach English to illegal aliens.

Being one of those liberals that filter out truth, I doubt if this comment even gets posted. So much for liberal support of freedom of speech!

I had mixed feelings about this until last night when they interviewed several members of the hispanic community on the news. They didn't feel it was right to sing our anthem in anything other than our language out of respect for our country and also expressed they would be offended if we sang their anthem in English.

Sometimes I think we go a little too far to make others feel welcome and accepted and give away too much ourselves in the process.

p.s. I love you and am sooo proud of you and how far you've come in the last few years.

about
i'm brooke, born in '73. i am currently a phd student in instructional technology. this is the blog where i capture all the neurotic, and the few non-neurotic, moments that seem to come with being a phd student (if you want to read less neuroses and more professionalism go to: oer's, dl's, reuse and culture: it's about a phd student researching digital resources in a multicultural world). i have been from eugene, oregon for a long time.. 8 years specifically (its my home now, but i grew up in southwestern virginia), but now i'm here in logan, utah at utah state university. after finding my roots in eugene i never could have expected that i would leave that liberal oasis and head to utah. but i did and there are days when its a blessing and days when i'm tempted to go back to oregon and beg the folks at lost valley educational center to let me move in. but i won't leave because there are days when this process is better than any kind of high i could ever imagine. what else? i collect things, i have 2 cats, 2 kayaks, 2 laptops (i'm a geek - one mac, one pc). i can be emailed at brookesblog@rivervision.com.
