I have been assaulted, What are my rights?

First of all- you have the right to decide about whether you will get medical treatment, and wheather you will report your assault to the authorities.

If you decide to report your assault to the authorities:

You have the right to:

  • to be treated with respect by anyone handling your sexual assault case

  • be interviewed by a female police officer if you do not feel comfortable talking to a male police officer

  • report the crime and not prosecute it

  • resonable prosecution by the law

  • withdraw your testimony against the attacker at anytime

If you decide to seek medical assistance:

You have the right to:

  • request that a female physician or that your personal physician examine you

  • to refuse any collection of medical evidence

  • be accompanied by someone

  • request that the physician examines all possible areas of bodily injury

  • change your mind and refuse treatment

  • exlude any law enforcements from the examining rooms
