Acquaintence assault: Any sexual activity that takes place between any people who know each other in any manner that has not been consented to by all parties involved.

Being assaulted by someone you know is just as scary as being assaulted by someone you don't know. It might take you awhile for you to recognize that what has happened to you is sexual assault. Even after you identify what has happened as being a sexual assault you still might have doubts. You may think that at some point you gave consent, or that you sent mixed signals, or that in some way it was your fault. Remember- what has happened to you is NOT your fault.

Some special concerns you may have:

  • You may see your assailant again

  • You might not be sure if you should report your assault to the police

  • People may not believe you

  • You may doubt your ability to trust people

You may also experience the feelings that survivors of non-acquaintence rape experience too- feelings of shame, fear and disblief.

The action you should take should be the same as any rape- find a friend to talk to, go to the emergency room, call a rape crisis line, call the police.
